Q: How do I prepare for a blizzard?

A: A little snow usually isn't a big deal, but a blizzard can be. If there's even the potential for a blizzard, it's important to be prepared. Here are some of our favorite blizzard preparedness tips:

  • Get the essentials together:  The basic gist is that you should have a three-day supply of non-perishable food, water, first-aid supplies, heating oil, medications, and batteries on hand and stored in one area. It's a good idea to stash away some warm clothing and blankets too. Non-perishable foods are things like oatmeal, soup, granola bars, applesauce, and canned fruit.
  • Save your contacts: Most people today have cell phones with all of their contacts saved, but not everyone might. If you don't, compile a list of contacts for your family and friends in case you need it during the emergency and store it in a safe area.
  • Prepare your home: Have your furnace inspected, check the weatherstripping on your windows and doors, and stock up on plastic sheeting to cover the windows to conserve heat if the power goes out. It's a good idea to check the pipes too. If they freeze during the blizzard and are in poor shape, you could have some serious problems on your hands.
  • Get your car ready: You may not be home when a blizzard strikes. If you get stranded, you'll need the essentials in your car. Put a small kit in your car and get it tuned up and ready to go before the serious winter weather hits. It's best to keep the tank full, too.
  • Limit any time outside: It's not important to keep clearing your driveway or walkways if the conditions are bad. Know your limits when it comes to shoveling to avoid bigger problems, like frostbite.

By taking simple steps before a blizzard strikes, you won't be caught off guard during a storm. Even the simplest steps can make a big difference.
