Toyota Motor Corporation built its first vehicle in 1936. Toyota is now an international conglomerate and one of the world's largest corporations.

If you are considering acquiring a Toyota, you will have a large selection of models to choose from. Before making a final decision, make sure you have the proper Toyota car insurance protection.

What Kind of Insurance Do You Need for Your Toyota?

There are a variety of factors to take into consideration when choosing proper car insurance coverage. From the age of your vehicle to the type of use you'll get out of it, all of these can affect your coverage. But first and foremost, you'll want to make sure that you understand the difference between mandated and optional insurance options.

Bodily injury liability: Bodily injury liability insurance covers medical bills and lost wages for any third party that is injured if you are in an at-fault accident in your Toyota. It will not pay for your personal injuries.

Property damage liability: This coverage will repair or replace any damaged property as a result of an accident with someone else's vehicle, building, or home.

Most states require a minimum amount of bodily injury and property damage liability. It's possible that your state's required minimum for liability insurance is not enough to protect you if you experience an incident. Make sure to speak with your independent insurance agent to understand how much liability insurance you need to be fully protected.

Medical payments/Personal injury protection: In addition to liability coverage, some states require medical payments or personal injury protection (PIP) coverage. PIP insurance usually offers between $5,000 and $25,000 in coverage for any limited necessary medical treatment. This coverage is available in "no-fault" states and is also required in some states. Even if it's not mandated, you'll have the ability to purchase medical payments insurance everywhere else.

Uninsured motorist coverage: If you're in an accident with someone who does not have insurance or has an insufficient amount, you'll be left having to pay for any damage they caused to your vehicle and you.  Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage offers a layer of protection that helps pay for repairs in the event that you're in an accident with an underinsured motorist.

Optional Coverage

Collision: Colliding with other vehicles and objects like stop signs and mailboxes can result in significant damage to your vehicle. Collision insurance covers any damage your Toyota sustains in the collision. This coverage is only valuable for cars that would cost a significant amount to repair or replace.

Comprehensive: If you collide with a deer, or experience vandalism or damage from a hailstorm, you are covered by comprehensive insurance

Glass coverage: Depending on the model of your Toyota, you could be paying nearly $2,000 to replace a broken windshield. Glass coverage is a low-premium, no-deductible option that makes this cost much more affordable.

Gap insurance: If you have a loan or lease on your Toyota, you may owe more than the market value of the vehicle. Gap insurance covers the difference between the amount your insurance company will pay if your car is totaled and the amount you owe to a bank or lease company.

If you purchase a brand-new Toyota, you will have the option to purchase gap insurance from the dealer. If not, you can still add this important coverage to your auto insurance with help from your agent.

What Affects the Cost of Insurance for Your Toyota?

  • Annual mileage: The average person drives between 10,000 and 15,000 miles per year. If you put more mileage than this on your Toyota, you're at higher risk of getting in an accident and so you may pay higher insurance premiums.
  • Your driving record: Having a clean driving record goes a long way with car insurance companies. Having just one violation can significantly impact your insurance premiums.
  • The value of your vehicle: It's no surprise that the value of your vehicle affects your insurance premiums. Insurance has to take into consideration the cost to replace your car in the event of an accident, so the higher the value of your vehicle, the more  expensive your insurance will be.

The following rates assume that the driver is a 40-year-old male who has a clean driving history. The policies reflect a $500 comprehensive and collision deductible, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and minimum liability limits. Rates are averaged across all 50 states.

The Safety of Your Toyota

Toyota is known for building reliable, efficient, and safe vehicles. The companies continuous high safety rankings work in favor of insurance premiums, seeing as the safer your vehicle, the better insurance premium you'll receive. Every car model will have its own safety features and ratings, but most models have four or five-out-of-five star overall safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

How Location Affects Your Toyota Insurance

Your location can play a crucial part in your insurance premium. For city drivers who deal with a lot of traffic and potential vandalism, you'll pay more than someone who lives in the countryside and faces less risk.
