Standard Medicare coverage includes Part A, which covers hospitalization care, and Part B, which covers medical expenses. These cover only a portion of your healthcare costs, which can leave you with excess charges, also referred to as a “gap.”
Medigap insurance closes this gap by providing additional coverage for copayment, coinsurance, and deductible amounts.
Medigap is offered through private insurance companies, and while plans are standardized by law, prices are not. There are 10 supplemental bundles to choose from. It's a good idea to research your Medigap insurance plan options and make sure you're choosing a plan that's right for your needs and budget.

Am I Qualified for Medigap Insurance?
- You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and B.
- You must be over 65, disabled, or meet other specific Medicare qualifications.
- You may be medically screened.
- You cannot be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan.
How Do I Enroll in Medigap Insurance?
When you turn 65, there is a period of six months known as open enrollment. During this time, you can obtain any form of Medicare coverage, including Medigap insurance, without medical screening.
Outside of open enrollment, those who are eligible can apply for Medigap insurance through private insurance companies. It’s essential that you have Medicare Part A and Part B first, which you can get online or through your Medicare state representatives.
How Much Does Medigap Insurance Cost?
While plans are standardized by the law, Medigap insurance companies have the right to charge different prices for the same plan. Because of this, it is essential that you compare plans in your state to find the right Medigap coverage plan for your budget.
Typical Medigap plan rates vary. The factors that play a role in determining your premium include the following:
- The Medigap supplement plan you buy
- The rates set by the Medigap insurance company
- Your state
- Your age
- Any discounts offered within the plan, such as a discount for a clean bill of health, if medical underwriting is involved
When searching for Medigap insurance in your state, make sure you get multiple Medigap insurance quotes before you buy, to ensure you're getting a policy at a competitive rate.
What Do Medigap Supplemental Insurance Plans Cover?
Medigap supplemental policies are designed to cover the gaps in healthcare costs that original Medicare does not cover, and help seniors and those with disabilities to manage the costs of their care. These costs include Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs and Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayments.
Medigap does not cover long-term care or vision and dental services. If you need eyeglasses, hearing aids or orthodontia, you will need to purchase additional coverage.
Private duty nurses are also not covered, and Medigap doesn’t include any form of prescription drug coverage. Purchasing Medicare Part D can help pay for necessary medications.
