Just because you don’t live on the west coast doesn’t mean you’re safe from earthquakes. Thirty-four of Kentucky’s counties have experienced an earthquake. While minor earthquakes can hardly be felt, those ranging from mid to high on the Richter scale can cause significant damage. Homeowner policies normally have exclusions for earthquake-related damage so, how will you pay for any repairs? With a Kentucky earthquake insurance policy, you’re protected.

The Largest Earthquake in Kentucky

  • Occurred on July 27, 1980, in Sharpsburg, Bath County
  • The magnitude was 5.2
  • Property damage in Maysville totaled $1 million
  • In Mason County, 37 commercial buildings and 269 homes were damaged
  • The earthquake was felt in over 15 states and in Ontario, Canada

The shake of an earthquake can be felt for miles. Just because an earthquake occurs somewhere else doesn’t mean that your state can’t suffer damage.

What’s the New Madrid Fault Line?

Western Kentucky residents are especially at a high risk of earthquakes due to this seismic zone. The shifting of tectonic plates is the primary cause of earthquakes, but there are only certain regions where these plates end. This fault line runs through seven U.S. states and caused the 1812 earthquakes which formed Reelfoot Lake. The shock waves were felt as far as Virginia. While the initial earthquake occurred in December, the aftershocks continued for months and on February 7, 1812, the largest shock formed waterfalls in the Mississippi and created a large wave that traveled upstream. Where it stopped is now the Reelfoot Lake.

In today’s scale, these earthquakes registered anywhere from 7- 8, resulting in major damage. While Kentucky earthquake insurance may not have been an option back then, the chances of another earthquake occurring are high. Now that you have the option of purchasing earthquake insurance, take advantage of it.

Protecting Your Home

While earthquake insurance will normally cover damage to the structure of your home and personal property, some companies will exclude coverage for high-risk homes. The costs of these policies will be dependent upon the risk of damage. Purchasing an insurance policy will certainly be cheaper than rebuilding your home if a large scale earthquake occurs. There are also other ways to protect your home. If you live in an older house, consult with a contractor to see if the house has any weak areas that could be fortified. Make sure all shelves and other units are properly attached to the wall. This could help lessen personal property damage claims.
