Is Kentucky Motorcycle Insurance Required?
If you operate any type of motorcycle, you must have a minimum amount of insurance for your bike. Dirt bikes, sport bikes and choppers are no exception. According to the state, a motorcycle is a motorized bicycle with at least 50 cc or more that can travel faster than 30 miles per hour. You must register your motorcycle and have these minimum liability insurance coverage amounts:
- $25,000 in bodily injury liability per person per accident
- $50,000 in bodily injury liability per accident
- $10,000 in property damage liability per accident
You also have the option to purchase no fault coverage, which will provide up to $10,000 of compensation if someone is injured. The only drawback to no fault coverage, which isn’t concerned with who caused the accident, is that by opting in, you limit your right to sue another party. You must carry proof of insurance with you at all times, and if you drive without Kentucky motorcycle insurance, you could have to pay a fine or even lose your license.
Kentucky Motorcycle Insurance Options
For comprehensive coverage, additional policies are available. Your member agent can help analyze your personal needs and suggest other options that will protect you the most. If your bike is worth less than the cost of full coverage, you may want to purchase only liability coverage. On the other hand, if you have customized chopper, you probably want to fully insure it. Other coverage options include the following:
- Collision coverage: If you’re in an accident, liability will pay for the other party’s damage but collision will pay for damage to your own bike.
- Comprehensive coverage or "other than collision": This coverage pays for damage to your bike resulting from the weather or criminally related incidents.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: Although it’s the law to purchase insurance, not everyone does. If you’re in an accident with an uninsured/underinsured motorist, this portion covers the costs that you absorb from the crash.
- Medical payments: If you sustain injuries or even die from a crash, this option will help pay your medical bills or assist with funeral costs.
- Accessories coverage: This would be ideal for your customized chopper. Your standard policy does not cover upgrades that increase the value of your bike. This pays for damage that occurs to any enhanced features of your bike.
