Drivers in Akron are just as likely to get in a car accident than they would be across the state. Ohio can have severe winter weather, as well as rain and hail storms. Even a fender bender can be stressful, so it's important to have the right types and amounts of car insurance

Shopping for auto insurance is a hassle if you have to contact multiple companies for quotes. When you work with an independent insurance agent, you'll enjoy a single point of contact and you'll still get quotes from different insurance companies. Find an insurance agent in Akron today to learn more about how an independent insurance agent can help you get the coverage you need that fits into your budget.

How Much Does Car Insurance Cost in Akron, OH?

Insuring your car in Akron costs less, on average, than it does in some other parts of the country. Even so, taking the time to shop around can save you hundreds of dollars each year.

  • National average annual car insurance cost: $1,311
  • Ohio average annual car insurance cost: $789

Your quotes from insurance companies will be based on your specific information, while averages may not apply to your situation. Every insurance company has their own methods for calculating premiums and determining risk.

Your quotes may be based on this information:

  • The make, model, and year of every vehicle you are insuring
  • Your age, gender, occupation, and marital status
  • Your driving record and credit score
  • Information about other licensed drivers in your household
  • Whether you own or rent your home
  • The amount of your deductible
  • The amount of liability insurance you are purchasing
  • The coverage options you are including in your policy

You may be able to get significant discounts if you bundle your renters insurance or homeowners insurance policies. You may be entitled to other discounts as well. Your agent can help you understand how to get the most coverage for your money.

An Akron independent insurance agent will help you compare prices and get every discount that pertains to your situation.

What Does Akron Car Insurance Cover?

Your auto insurance will be a mixture of required and optional coverage. Akron residents must adhere to Ohio's laws about the minimum amount of liability insurance you need. You aren't required to purchase personal injury protection or uninsured motorist coverage though.

If you have a lease or a loan on your car, your lender may require you to prove that you've met their minimum insurance requirements. In addition to the state's liability minimums, you may also have to purchase "full coverage" auto insurance that includes comprehensive and collision coverage. Here's what each type of insurance does for you:

Liability insurance: This required coverage pays for someone else's injuries and damage to their property resulting from an accident you cause. In Ohio, you must carry these minimum amounts:

    • Bodily injury liability coverage: At least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident
    • Property damage liability coverage: At least $25,000 per accident.

Personal injury protection (PIP): This optional coverage pays medical expenses for you and your passengers if you are injured in a crash, whether or not it was your fault.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage: This optional coverage pays for damage to your property and your medical bills after an accident caused by a driver that doesn't have enough liability insurance. It also covers you if you are in a hit-and-run accident.

Collision insurance: This optional insurance replaces or repairs your car if it's damaged in a crash. Your lender or dealership may require this coverage.

Comprehensive insurance: This optional coverage pays to repair or replace your vehicle if it's damaged or lost due to an event other than a crash. You may be covered for garage fires, weather events, floods, and falling objects.

Roadside assistance and towing: This optional coverage helps you get back on the road after the mechanical failure of your vehicle or a flat tire. It also helps you if you lock your keys in your car or run out of gas.

Rental reimbursement coverage: This optional coverage pays the bill if you need to rent a car while yours is in the shop for repairs after a covered event.

Your Akron independent agent can help you determine how much and which types of insurance work best for your situation.

What Is the Penalty for Driving without Insurance in Akron?

Driving without insurance is illegal in Ohio. If caught, uninsured drivers can face the following:

  • Temporary revocation of drivers license
  • License reinstatement fee of $100
  • Suspension of license for two years or more if you are involved in an accident and don't have the right types and amounts of insurance

There are fewer uninsured drivers in Ohio than there are on average across the country.

  • Percentage of US drivers who are uninsured: 13%
  • Percentage of Ohio drivers who are uninsured: 12.4%

You aren't required to carry uninsured motorist coverage if you own your vehicle, but it's a smart addition to your car insurance policy if you want coverage for accidents caused by drivers without the right types of insurance. Without this coverage, you'll have to sue the driver to get reimbursed for your medical bills and vehicle damage.

How High Is the Auto Theft Rate in Akron?

The auto theft rate in Ohio is lower than the national average.

  • National auto theft rate per 1,000 vehicles: 2.37%
  • Ohio auto theft rate per 1,000 vehicles: 1.79%

While your risk of having your car stolen is slim, you can only be reimbursed for an auto theft with insurance that includes comprehensive coverage. This coverage also handles damage to your vehicle caused by hail, flooding, and fire.

If you have a lease or loan, you may already have a comprehensive insurance policy. If not, talk with your agent about how much it would cost to add this important coverage to your policy.
